What is pajeon dipping sauce?
First of all, what is pajeon? Pajeon (pronounced pa-jeon) is a crispy and greasy Korean scallion pancake made with a flour base. It is served with a side of dipping sauce, and usually eaten family style as an appetizer. Check out my pajeon recipe here!
There is no strict recipe for the dipping sauce, but typically dipping sauces for Korean pancakes will feature some blend soy sauce and sesame oil. I used both of these ingredients. Some recipes also call for rice vinegar or sugar, but that is optional for this recipe.
What do you need to make this pajeon dipping sauce?
Making this pajeon dipping sauce is super easy, and you only need the following 4 ingredients!
- soy sauce/tamari
- sesame oil
- sesame seeds
- finger long hot red pepper
All of the above ingredients can be found at your Korean/Asian grocery store. You can also substitute dried red pepper flakes for the finger long hot red pepper I used.
How do you make this dipping sauce?
Making this sauce requires no cooking. You just have to mix all of the ingredients together in a small container. The hardest part of making this recipe is mincing the red pepper. Just don't accidentally rub your eyes after mincing the red pepper and you're all good.
Tips and tricks for the best dipping sauce:
There's not much to say about making this dipping sauce. Consider customizing to your own liking by adding some sugar or maple syrup to sweeten it up, or add a touch of vinegar (rice vinegar or apple cider) for some zing.
This pajeon dipping sauce is:
- Made with 4 ingredients only
- Can be made in under 2 minutes
- Has a subtle sesame taste with a slight kick of the chili

Description
Pajeon Dipping Sauce – This pajeon dipping sauce has a subtle sesame flavor with a slight kick. Can be made in under 2 minutes with just 4 ingredients! Vegan and can be made gluten-free.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp soy sauce or tamari (for gluten-free)
- ½ tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds
- 1 tsp finger long hot red pepper, minced
Instructions
- In a small flat sauce dish, mix the tamari, sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds and the minced red pepper.
- Serve alongside freshly made pajeon!
Notes
- You can also replace the 1 tsp finger long hot red pepper with ¼ tsp dry red pepper flakes. Or omit altogether or halve the amount if you want less spice!
- Some pajeon dipping sauce recipe also calls for some rice vinegar. You can include that if you want (1:3 or 1:4 ratio of vinegar to soy sauce is recommended), but personally I don't.
